Back in action!

I've been fairly busy with work for a while but since I have a couple moments of free time today, it's time to talk weather.

Local Weather Here in Southern MB
The band of rain that has brought showers throughout the day is moving off however the clouds will stick around the rest of the day. Looking ahead, Saturday will bring partly cloudy skies in the morning with pop-up showers or non-severe thunderstorms late in the day. Highs will stick around 5C below normal. Sunday will be a little warmer with a lesser chance of rain (about 30% chance). In the long range, most weather models have warm weather moving in by the weekend of June 4th, this also translates to a better chance of seeing severe storms with a possible system passing through.

Around the World
Typhoon Songda, a category 5 typhoon, is spinning in the Northwestern Pacific dangerously close to the Phillipines. It's now aimed towards Taiwan and the islands of Okinawa, Japan (just north-east of Taiwan). It is expected that the storm makes landfall as a catergory 2-3 typhoon.

Cool Canadian Weather Facts for the Month of May

-May 13 1986, Alberta gets hammered with a late winter storm bringing blizzard conditions with 80km/h winds.
-May 23 1977, Chatham NB reaches temperatures topping 35C making it the highest temperature of the month of May for Canada in 1977.
-May 31 1985 Barrie, Ont gets hit with a strong tornado, killing 8 people and causing an estimated 100 million in damages. In total 13 tornadoes were reported that day making it the largest single day event in Canada for tornadoes.

Quiet Week Weather-Wise in Southern MB

Local weather here in southern MB
It will be a quiet week here in southern Manitoba with mainly sunny skies for this week after a warm front passed this morning bringing gloomy/showery skies. After today (high of 14C!), highs will still be above normal but only ranging from mid to high single digits.

Around the world
Hurricane Tomas has done some major damage to the isalands of St Vincent (around 60million worth) and Barbados (around 55 million worth). It is predicted that what is now left of the hurricane will start to strengthen again and move, slowly, closer to Haiti.

Cool Canadian Weather Facts for the Week of November 1-7

- In 1999 Winnipeg recieved it's highest sustained November windspeeds of 87k/h (gusting to 113k/h). (Nov. 1st)
- In 1869, a very powerful storm crossed the Great Lakes producing high winds, sinking more then 75 ships. (Nov. 7)
- Winnipeg 1986, winnipeggers see 30cm of snowfall combined with high winds, gusting to 90k/h and producing blizzard conditions, making it the worst blizzard in many years.

Strong Low Pressure System Moving In

Local Weather here in Southern Manitoba
A deep low pressure currently situated in Sask/ND will be moving through our region and stalling over NW Ontario dumping everything from heavy rains to heavy wet snow on the back side of the low. Winnipeg will be recieving anything from 50-85mm of rain, and on top of that around 5cm of accumulative snow (depending if the surface temperature will be low enough to not melt the snow) when it's all said and done. This nasty low pressure (That is forcast to be the same pressure of a catagory 3 hurricane - around 957mb!!!) will also bring very powerful winds that could be gusting to 80k/h, just below wind warning criteria. After this system moves out we can expect things to clear out but giving way to chilly days on thursday and friday with highs only reaching 1-2C.

For those trick-or-treaters out there Halloween should be around normal temperature wise, with partly cloudy skies.

Weather Around the World
Hurricane Richard has been downgraded to a Tropical Depression after passing over Belize and losing most of it's strength due to not being over the warm Carribean waters.

In other world weather news, those living in extreme southern Ontario have a good chance of seeing strong to severe thunderstorms tomorrow due to a surface front moving through. SPC has issued a 45% hatched area and state that there is a chance of isolated tornadoes.

Cool Canadian Weather Facts for the Week of October 24-31

- In 2000, Southern Quebec was hit with one of it's earliest/harshest snowstorms dumping around 40cm of snow and wind gusts topped 100k/h!!! (oct. 28)
- In 1999, it was rather a trick then a treat in Sask. when an Alberta clipper dished out several centimeters of snow and packed 110k/h winds. (oct. 31)
-Finally, in 1996, 135k/h wind gusts in southern Ontario killed 4 people and caused flooding on the Naigra River Parkway. (oct. 30)
